Green Monday 2026 on Shopify: Offers That Work in the Last Shipping Week

Green Monday Shopify_ feature

Green Monday falls on Monday, 14 December 2026, the second Monday of December. In the US, the last recommended day to send USPS Ground Advantage for Christmas delivery is Thursday 17 December, so a Green Monday offer on Shopify has three days to work. Build it around "arrives before Christmas", not around a bigger discount than Black Friday.

By mid-December, shoppers who wanted a deal have had one. What they need now is a gift that turns up on time. This guide gives you the dates, four offers that fit the week, what each one costs you, and how to schedule them so nothing runs past a shipping cut-off.

Key takeaways

  • Green Monday 2026 is 14 December. Shopping.com, an eBay company, coined the name in 2007 (Wikipedia).

  • USPS send-by dates for Christmas 2026 (lower 48): Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail 17 December, Priority Mail 18 December, Priority Mail Express 19 December (USPS).

  • End free shipping before your cut-off. If your free shipping uses Ground Advantage and you need a day to pack, your last free-shipping day is 16 December.

  • Lead with delivery, not depth. A free-shipping deadline, a gift at a cart goal and a "buy one more" tier protect margin better than a deeper cut.

  • Switch after 19 December. Point shoppers to gift cards and local pickup, which don't need a carrier.

  • Schedule everything in advance. Shopify discounts and DiscountRay offers both take start and end dates. DiscountRay's scheduling and milestone progress bar are on the Growth plan ($14 a month).

Why Green Monday is different from Black Friday

Black Friday and Cyber Monday are about price. In 2025, US shoppers spent $14.25 billion online on Cyber Monday alone, and $257.8 billion across November and December, according to Adobe (Adobe, January 2026). Discounts peaked at about 25% off in apparel and 30% in toys.

Two weeks later, the question in the shopper's head has changed from "is this the best price?" to "will this arrive in time?". Adobe's same report shows the shift: curbside pickup made up 17.1% of online orders across the season but peaked at 39.0% on 23 December, when shipping was no longer an option.

That gives a small Shopify store a real edge in Green Monday week. Big marketplaces can't make your shipping deadline more urgent than it is, but you can say it plainly: "Order by Thursday for Christmas." A clear date does more selling in mid-December than another 10% off, and it costs nothing.

It also means you don't need to beat your Black Friday discount. If your Green Monday price is lower than your Black Friday price, the customers who bought in November learn to wait next year. Our post-BFCM discount strategy covers how to keep December offers from undercutting November.

What Green Monday shoppers are buying

The shopper in Green Monday week is usually buying for someone else and running out of time. They have a list with a few names left on it, a rough budget per person, and a growing worry about delivery. That shapes what sells:

  • Stocking fillers and small add-ons under $20, often in twos and threes.

  • Gift sets that solve a whole name on the list in one click.

  • Consumables such as food, candles and skincare, which feel safe when you don't know someone's size or taste.

  • Gift cards, once shipping is too late.

It also shapes what doesn't sell. Big, considered purchases mostly happened in November, when the discounts were deepest. A Green Monday offer that asks someone to think hard about a $300 item is fighting the week. An offer that says "add one more and it ships free before the deadline" is working with it.

On your store, that means putting gift sets and low-priced items at the top of the home page and collection pages from 14 December, and moving full-price hero products down for a week.

The dates to plan around

Date (2026)

What happens

What to do

Mon 14 Dec

Green Monday

Start your last-week offers

Wed 16 Dec

One day before the Ground Advantage cut-off

End free shipping tonight if you need a day to pack

Thu 17 Dec

USPS Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail send-by date (lower 48)

Switch free shipping off, or raise the threshold

Fri 18 Dec

USPS Priority Mail send-by date

Show "order today for Christmas" on paid shipping

Sat 19 Dec

USPS Priority Mail Express send-by date

Final paid-shipping push

From Sun 20 Dec

Ground shipping won't arrive in time

Promote gift cards and local pickup

These are USPS's recommended send-by dates for delivery by 25 December, not guaranteed delivery dates. USPS gives no fixed Ground Advantage date for Alaska and Hawaii because those routes take 10 days or more, so check the estimate for your ZIP codes. Add your own packing time before every date.

green monday shopify - last-shipping-day-christmas

Last shipping days for Christmas 2026 across USPS, UPS, and FedEx.

UPS and FedEx express services run later: UPS 3 Day Select and FedEx Express Saver on 21 December, 2-day services on 22 December, and overnight on 23 December, according to ShipStation's 2026 list. UPS Ground has no single date, so check UPS's time-in-transit tool for your routes. These late options are useful as paid upgrades, but they usually cost more than a small gift, so don't make them free.

Work out your own cut-off

Your cut-off is the carrier's send-by date minus the time it takes you to pick, pack and hand over an order. Write it down for each shipping method you offer:

1. Find your slowest free method. For most stores that's USPS Ground Advantage: 17 December.

2. Subtract your packing time. If orders placed on Wednesday ship on Thursday, your last order day for that method is Wednesday 16 December.

3. Subtract a buffer if you're busy. If December orders already take two days to leave, use 15 December.

4. Repeat for Priority Mail (18 December) and any express method.

Those dates become the end dates of your offers and the text of your banners.

Four Green Monday offers that fit the last shipping week

Each of these works for a different kind of store. Most stores should run two of them, not all four.

1. Free shipping until your cut-off

Offer free shipping over a threshold from 14 December until the day before your last ship date, then end it automatically. The deadline is real, so it does the selling: "Free shipping ends Wednesday. After that, it won't arrive by Christmas."

Set the threshold just above your average order. A store with a $38 average order might use $45. Shopify's own free shipping discount can do this with a minimum purchase amount and an end date (Shopify Help Center). Our guide to Shopify free shipping covers thresholds and which rates to exclude.

2. A gift for reaching a cart goal

Add a small free gift at a cart value above your average order, for example, a mini product at $60. A progress bar tells the shopper how close they are: "Spend $12 more for a free mini soap." Gifts work well in December because shoppers are buying for other people, and a free extra is one more stocking filler.

In DiscountRay, this is a milestone offer. You can stack milestones, for example, a percentage off at one cart value, a shipping reward at the next, and a gift at the top. See our guide to Shopify milestone discounts.

DiscountRay milestone offers: rewards at three cart values, with the progress bar on the product page.

3. A tier for one more item

"Buy 2, save 10%; buy 3, save 15%" works for stocking fillers, candles, socks, snacks, and anything under $20. Shoppers in Green Monday week are finishing a list, not starting one, so a reason to add one more item lands well.

Keep the tiers on low-cost products where one extra unit is pure margin. A tier table on the product page shows the savings before the shopper adds to cart, which is what makes it work. Our post on Shopify tiered discounts explains the setup, and quantity breaks vs volume discounts vs tiered pricing sorts out the terms.

4. Pickup and gift cards after the cut-off

From 20 December, stop promoting products that need shipping. Point shoppers to local pickup if you have a shop or a warehouse door, and to gift cards, which arrive by email (Shopify Help Center: gift cards).

This is the part most Green Monday guides miss. The week after your cut-off still has buyers. Adobe's 39% curbside peak on 23 December shows how many people switch to pickup once shipping is off the table. Turn on local pickup in Shopify before December if you can offer it.

Which offer fits your store

Not every offer suits every catalogue. Here's a starting point by store type. Treat it as a first guess and check it against your own margins.

Store type

Best Green Monday offer

Why it fits

Watch out for

Apparel and accessories

Free shipping over a threshold, ending before the cut-off

Size exchanges after Christmas cost money, so a clean deadline beats a deep cut

Returns: state your holiday return window clearly

Beauty and skincare

Gift at a cart goal (a mini or sample)

Minis cost little and feel like a real extra

Gift stock: set a maximum so you don't run out on day two

Food and drink

Quantity tiers on small items

Shoppers buy for several people at once

Perishables need faster shipping, so use earlier cut-offs

Home and candles

Gift sets plus free shipping

Sets solve a whole name on the list

Heavy items make free shipping expensive; raise the threshold

B2B and corporate gifts

Volume tiers for company buyers, ending earlier

Office orders are big and need production time

Print or packing time: set an order cut-off days before the carrier date

For corporate gift buyers, the deadline comes much earlier than 17 December, because you need time to print, pack and ship 50 or 100 units. If you sell to companies, DiscountRay can show tiered prices to B2B customers by company, customer list or tag, and the same scheduling applies.

What each offer costs you

Here's a worked example with made-up numbers, so you can see the mechanics. A soap shop's average order is $38. Its products cost 30% of the selling price, an average shipping label costs $8.50, and a mini soap costs $2.40 to make.

Offer

Example cart

What it costs the shop

Cost as % of the cart

25% off everything (Black Friday style)

$48

$12.00

25%

Free shipping over $45

$48

$8.50 (the label)

18%

Buy 3 save 15% on $9 bars

$27

$4.05

15%

Free mini soap at $60

$60

$2.40

4%

The gift costs the least per order, because you give away something worth more to the shopper than it costs you. Free shipping costs more, but it pulls a $38 order up to $45 and has a real deadline. A deeper sitewide discount costs the most and teaches customers to wait.

Your numbers will be different. Put your own product cost, label cost, and gift cost into the same four rows before you choose.

green-monday-offer-cost-per-order

What each Green Monday offer costs as a share of the cart, in the soap shop example.

Example: a soap shop's Green Monday plan

This is an example, not a customer. The soap shop with a $38 average order sets:

  • Free shipping over $45, 14 to 16 December. It ships Ground Advantage and needs a day to pack, so free shipping ends on the 16th.

  • A free mini soap at $60, 14 to 18 December, with a progress bar on product and cart pages.

  • Buy 2 save 10%, buy 3 save 15% on stocking-filler bars, 14 to 18 December.

  • A banner from 17 December: "Christmas delivery: order by Fri 18 Dec with Priority Mail."

  • Gift cards on the home page from 20 December, plus "pick up in store" for local customers.

green-monday-shopify-offer-schedule

The soap shop's offers on one timeline, each ending before its shipping cut-off.

Should the gift and the tier stack? In this plan, yes: a shopper who buys three bars and reaches $60 gets both. If your margins are thinner, let only one apply. Decide before you launch, because shoppers will find any combination you leave open. Our guide to Shopify discount stacking explains how combinations work.

Write the banner around the date

The banner is where most of the Green Monday selling happens. A good one names three things: the date, the shipping method, and what happens after.

  • Name the day and date. "Order by Fri 18 Dec" beats "order soon".

  • Name the method. "With Priority Mail" tells the shopper which option to pick at checkout.

  • Say what ends. "Free shipping ends Wed 16 Dec" gives a second deadline.

  • Change it on time. A banner that still says "order by the 18th" on the 19th costs you trust and refund requests.

An example banner that names the ship date, the method and the end of free shipping.

Don't promise delivery by a date. USPS dates are recommendations, so say "order by" and "for Christmas delivery", and put the carrier's own wording in your shipping policy.

How to set it up in DiscountRay

DiscountRay runs automatic discounts at Shopify checkout. Scheduling, milestone offers and the milestone progress bar are on the Growth plan ($14 a month, 14-day free trial), according to the DiscountRay pricing page.

1. Create each offer. Add a milestone offer for the gift (and a shipping reward if you want one), and a quantity discount for the stocking-filler tiers.

2. Set start and end dates on each one. Use the dates from your cut-off list, so offers switch on and off by themselves. Times follow your store's time zone, so check it in Shopify settings.

3. Turn on the milestone progress bar. On Growth it can show on home, collection, product and cart pages.

4. Check combinations. Decide whether the gift and the tier can apply to the same cart, and whether either combines with a discount code.

5. Preview on 13 December. Use a test product and build carts at $44, $45, $59 and $60 to check each threshold and message.

6. Set a reminder for 20 December to swap the home page to gift cards and pickup.

One thing to check: the App Store listing puts "free gifts" on the Pro plan ($29), while the pricing page shows gift rewards in milestone and bundle offers on lower plans. Check your plan in the app before you promise a gift on your banner. The pricing page also shows a BFCM26 code for 30% off for 12 months, valid until 12 December 2026.

Doing it with Shopify alone

You can build most of this without an app. Shopify's automatic discounts take start and end dates, a free shipping discount can have a minimum purchase amount, and "Buy X get Y" can add a free product. What Shopify doesn't give you on the storefront is a progress bar or a tier table on the product page, so shoppers don't see how close they are until the cart.

If you want the theme banner to switch on the same schedule as the discounts, Shopify's Rollouts feature can schedule theme changes. Our guide to testing a discount with Rollouts walks through it.

Email and SMS timing for Green Monday week

Your banner reaches people who visit. Email and SMS bring them back on the right days. A simple send plan for 2026:

Day

Message

Main line

Sun 13 Dec

Teaser

"Tomorrow: free shipping and a gift for last-minute orders"

Mon 14 Dec

Launch

"Green Monday: free shipping over $45 and a free mini at $60"

Wed 16 Dec

Last free-shipping day

"Free shipping ends tonight. After that, it won't arrive by Christmas"

Fri 18 Dec

Priority Mail last call

"Last day for Christmas delivery with Priority Mail"

Sun 20 Dec

Gift cards and pickup

"Too late to ship? Send a gift card in a minute"

Keep each message about one deadline. Shoppers who opened your Black Friday emails have seen a lot of "biggest sale ever" lines by now, and a plain date stands out. Don't send all five to everyone: skip the gift-card email for people who ordered in the last week.

Common Green Monday mistakes

  • Free shipping that runs past the cut-off. Orders placed on the 18th with free Ground shipping won't arrive, and those customers will ask for refunds.

  • A deeper discount than Black Friday. It rewards waiting and annoys November buyers.

  • Forgetting packing time. The carrier's date is when the parcel must be with them, not when the order comes in.

  • Leaving Alaska and Hawaii out of the plan. Ground Advantage to those states has no fixed Christmas date.

  • Open stacking. A gift, a tier and a code all on one cart can wipe out the margin.

  • No plan for 20 to 24 December. Gift cards and pickup keep selling after shipping stops.

How to measure your Green Monday offers

Look at these numbers for 14 to 20 December, and compare them with the same week last year:

  • Average order value against your threshold. If your free-shipping threshold is $45 and your average order moved from $38 to $46, the threshold did its job.

  • Share of carts that reached the gift. If almost nobody reached $60, the goal was too high. If almost everyone did, it was too low.

  • Discount cost per order. Add up shipping you paid for, gifts given and tier savings, and divide by orders.

  • Late-delivery tickets after Christmas. If you got many, your cut-off was too late or your banner wasn't clear.

Use UTM tags on email and SMS links so you know which message drove each order. Then write down what you'd change for 2027 while you still remember.

After Christmas: keep the gift buyers

Many Green Monday buyers are new to your store, and some of them bought for someone else. Both are worth a follow-up in January. Thank the buyer, invite the gift receiver to shop with a small first-order offer, and remind both about your return window. Our guide to holiday gift buyer retention has a full plan.

The short version

Green Monday on Shopify is 14 December 2026, three days before the last USPS Ground Advantage date. Run a free-shipping offer that ends before your cut-off, a gift at a cart goal and a small quantity tier, all scheduled to switch off on their own. Then switch to gift cards and pickup from 20 December.

FAQs

When is Green Monday 2026?
Monday 14 December 2026. Green Monday is usually the second Monday of December. comScore defines it as the last Monday at least 10 days before Christmas, which is 14 December this year.
What's the last day to ship for Christmas 2026?
For USPS in the lower 48 states: 17 December for Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail, 18 December for Priority Mail and 19 December for Priority Mail Express. UPS and FedEx express services run to 23 December. Check your carrier and add your packing time.
Should I discount more on Green Monday than on Black Friday?
Usually not. In the last shipping week, on-time delivery matters more to shoppers than a deeper cut. A free-shipping deadline or a gift at a cart goal protects margin better.
What are good Green Monday sale ideas for a small Shopify store?
Free shipping over a threshold that ends before your cut-off, a free gift at a cart goal with a progress bar, "buy 2 save 10%, buy 3 save 15%" on stocking fillers, and gift cards and local pickup after shipping stops.
Can I schedule Shopify discounts to end automatically?
Yes. Shopify discounts and DiscountRay offers both take start and end dates and times, set in your store's time zone.
When should I turn off free shipping for Christmas?
The day before your slowest free method's send-by date, if you need a day to pack. For USPS Ground Advantage in 2026, that means ending free shipping on 16 December.
Does Green Monday work for B2B or wholesale stores?
Partly. Corporate gift buyers order earlier than consumers, so your cut-off comes days before the carrier date. Use volume tiers for company buyers and end them when your production time runs out.
Is Green Monday only in the US?
The name started with eBay's Shopping.com in the US and is used most there. The dates in this guide are for US carriers. If you ship elsewhere, use your own carrier's Christmas dates with the same plan. Your Green Monday checklist Work through this list in the first week of December, so Green Monday runs itself: Write your cut-off date for each shipping method, including packing time. Pick two offers that suit your store and margins, not four. Set a start and end date on every discount, in your store's time zone. Decide which offers can stack, and test one cart that qualifies for all of them. Check gift stock and set a limit if you could run out. Write the banner text for each phase: 14 to 16 December, 17 to 19 December and 20 December onward. Update your shipping policy page with the carrier dates and your "order by" wording. Turn on local pickup and make sure gift cards are on sale. Schedule the five emails or texts. Put a reminder in your calendar for 20 December to swap the home page.
